The environment is really important to us. Through vertical farming we want to contribute to more sustainable food production and consumption.
Grönska’s main driving force is to contribute in a positive way to the environment. One fourth of a household’s environmental impact is caused by food consumption. Vertical farming is a new kind of growing method that has great potential to contribute to a more sustainable food production.
No use of pesticides: Plants are grown in a controlled environment thus there is no need for chemicals.
Decreased food transports: By growing food close to the city and consumers, long-distance food transportation can be avoided. Consumption of food stands for a large part of a household's emissions and is primarily generated by food import.
Less overfertilization of lakes and oceans: Traditional farming leads to overfertilization of lakes and oceans through the soil. With a hydroponic watering system the fertilizers are kept in a closed loop.
Decreased water usage: Hydroponic farming uses as little as a tenth of the water conventional farming uses. Farming as a whole consumes 70% of the global freshwater.
Energy efficiency: LED:s are more energy efficient than traditional greenhouse lighting and enable vertical farming by being compact and having less heat excess.
Better taste: The proximity of production means plants can be harvested just before they get consumed, which of course keeps them fresher and more tasty.
Independence of climate: Growing with LED:s allows production year round and entirely independent of the climate which is extra beneficial in cold countries like Sweden.
Resilience and self-sufficiency: Local food production increases the resilience to climate challenges and other societal challenges that can affect food security.
Less food waste: With a shorter value chain and decreased transports, food waste can be avoided.
